Leg Press Calf Raise

Pressing the platform with only the balls of the feet allows heavy loading of the calves in a safe, supported position. It is a good way to add calf volume without balancing a barbell or standing under a bar.

1
Sit in the leg press machine, legs extended, balls of your feet on the lower edge of the platform.
2
Let your heels drop down for a full stretch.
3
Press through the balls of your feet to extend your ankles fully.
4
Squeeze your calves at the top, then lower slowly.
5
Keep your knees slightly bent, not locked, throughout.
Allows very heavy calf work with a stable back and no need for balance, and is easy to progress. It also lets you train each leg separately if needed.
Do 3 to 4 sets of 15 to 20 reps with a slow tempo and a full stretch at the bottom. Keep the knees slightly bent but fixed and press through the balls of the feet.
Do not lock the knees, and use a controlled range. Avoid letting the platform drop quickly, which can strain the Achilles.
Make it hardersingle-leg versions.
Make it easierlighter weight.

Is the leg press calf raise as good as standing raises?

It gives a similar benefit with easier loading and a supported back, although it does not train balance as standing raises do.

How heavy should I go?

Heavy enough for 15 to 20 controlled reps with a full stretch at the bottom.
