What is BMR? Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body burns just to stay alive at rest — breathing, circulating blood, maintaining organ function — before you factor in any movement or exercise.
We use the Harris-Benedict equation, one of the most widely validated formulas in nutrition science:
Men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) − (5.677 × age)
Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age)
Your BMR is the starting point for every other calculation on this page — TDEE, calorie targets for fat loss or muscle gain, all build on this number.
Are these calculators accurate? They use established, peer-reviewed formulas (Harris-Benedict for BMR, US Navy method for body fat), but any calculator gives an estimate — individual metabolism varies. Use these numbers as a starting point, then adjust based on real-world results over 2-3 weeks.
Should I recalculate as I lose weight? Yes — recalculate your BMR and TDEE every 5-7 kg of weight change, since your calorie needs shift as your body composition changes.
Metric or imperial? All calculators here use metric (kg, cm) since that's standard across India.
