Zumba — Warm Up

A dance-fitness warm-up starts with slow, rhythmic movements such as marching steps, hip circles, shoulder rolls and light side-to-side steps to raise body temperature before the faster songs begin. It prepares the joints and the heart for 40 to 50 minutes of continuous movement.

Modify intensity (bigger or smaller movements) to match your fitness level.
A proper warm-up raises heart rate gradually, lubricates the hips, knees and ankles, and lowers the chance of strains in the calves and lower back once the faster rhythms start. It also helps beginners learn basic steps at an easy pace before intensity builds.
Spend 5 to 8 minutes on easy marching, step-touches, shoulder and hip rolls, and gentle arm swings. Finish when you feel warm and your breathing is slightly deeper but still comfortable.
Wear supportive shoes and dance on a smooth floor. Avoid sticky or carpeted surfaces that can catch the foot when you pivot.

How long should a dance-fitness warm-up be?

About 5 to 8 minutes, enough to feel warm and slightly breathless without being tired.

Can I skip the warm-up if I am short on time?

It is better to shorten the main session than skip the warm-up, because cold muscles and joints are more prone to strain.
