Tyre Hammer Strike

In the tyre hammer strike, you swing a sledgehammer down onto a large tyre using the hips, core and shoulders. It is a high-intensity conditioning exercise that trains the whole body, particularly the core, lats, shoulders and grip, and the tyre absorbs the impact safely.

1
Stand in front of a large tyre, feet shoulder-width, sledgehammer in both hands.
2
Raise the hammer overhead, hands sliding to the top of the handle.
3
Swing down forcefully, striking the tyre, hands sliding back down the handle.
4
Alternate sides for balanced training.
5
Use your hips and core to generate power, not just your arms.
Builds rotational and overhead power, grip endurance and a conditioned core, and burns lots of energy in a short round. It also improves your ability to generate force through the hips and trunk, which supports throwing and combat sports.
Do 4 to 6 rounds of 20 to 40 seconds of strikes with 60 seconds of rest, alternating sides every few swings. Pick a hammer weight you can swing hard with control, and keep the pace steady instead of going all-out in the first few seconds.
Check the area is clear and the tyre is stable. Use a hammer you can control, keep your feet away from the strike zone and stop if you feel pain in the shoulder, elbow or lower back.
Make it hardera heavier hammer or longer rounds.
Make it easiera lighter hammer, shorter rounds and slower swings.

Is tyre hammer striking good for conditioning?

Yes. It raises the heart rate quickly while loading the core, shoulders and grip, which makes it a strong finisher.

Which hammer weight should I choose?

A light-to-moderate sledgehammer that you can swing with good form for the whole round, such as 4 to 8 kg for most beginners.
