The handstand push-up turns the overhead press into a bodyweight movement: you kick up against a wall, lower your head toward the floor and press back up. It loads the front delts, triceps and upper chest very heavily and demands strong shoulders, a tight core and good balance.

📋 How To Perform Handstand Push-Up
1
Kick up into a handstand against a wall, hands shoulder-width.
2
Lower your head slowly toward the floor by bending your elbows.
3
Go as low as your strength and mobility allow.
4
Press back up to full arm extension.
5
Build up with pike push-ups and wall holds before attempting full reps.
💡 Benefits of Handstand Push-Up
Builds serious pressing strength and shoulder size without a barbell, and teaches full-body tension while inverted. It carries over to overhead pressing, gymnastics skills and the confidence to control your own bodyweight upside down.
📈 Sets, Reps & Programming
Do 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 8 reps with 2 minutes rest, facing the wall with the belly toward it. If full reps are too hard, use partial range onto a stack of mats, or pike push-ups with the feet raised, until you can lower the head all the way down under control.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Letting the lower back arch hard so the ribs flare out
Flaring the elbows wide instead of keeping them at roughly 45 degrees
Dropping fast and bouncing off the head
Kicking up without a clear exit plan
✅ Pro Tips
Squeeze the glutes and brace the abs so the body stays in one straight line
Put the hands about shoulder width apart and lower to a light touch of the head on a mat
Learn the kick-up and the safe way to come down before adding reps
🛡️ Safety Notes
Inverted work raises pressure in the head and loads the neck, wrists and shoulders. Practise against a clear wall with a mat under the head, avoid it with neck, eye or blood pressure problems, and bail out by stepping or rolling down if you lose control.
🔁 Progressions & Regressions
Make it harderdeficit handstand push-ups on parallettes or strict free-standing reps.
Make it easierpike push-ups, then feet-elevated pike push-ups, then wall reps with a shortened range.
Is the handstand push-up better than the overhead press?
It trains the same pressing muscles and is excellent for strength relative to bodyweight, but a barbell press is easier to load progressively, so they work well together.
How do I build up to a handstand push-up?
Start with pike push-ups, raise the feet on a bench as they get easier, and then add wall-supported partial reps before attempting a full range.
