Ab Rollout

Rolling an ab wheel out in front of the body and pulling it back stretches and loads the entire abdominal wall through a long lever. It is one of the hardest and most effective core exercises, using only a small wheel.

1
Kneel on the floor, hands gripping an ab wheel (or barbell) in front of you.
2
Brace your core hard before you begin rolling forward.
3
Roll out slowly, keeping your back flat, until you reach your limit without sagging.
4
Pull back to the start using your abs, not your arms.
5
Stop the rollout at any point where your lower back starts to arch.
Builds serious core strength, particularly the ability to resist the lower back arching, which protects the spine in heavy lifts. It also trains the lats and shoulders as stabilisers.
Start with short-range rollouts from the knees, 3 sets of 5 to 10. Increase the distance gradually; do not attempt full rollouts until the core is strong enough to stay braced.
Advanced and demanding on the lower back. Use a kneeling pad, shorten the range, and skip it if you have back pain or are new to core training.
Make it harderstanding rollout or rollout from the feet.
Make it easierrollouts against a wall or short-range knee rollouts.

Why is the ab wheel so hard?

The long lever puts a huge anti-extension load on the abs, so even a short roll is challenging for beginners.

Is it safe for the lower back?

Yes, provided the core stays braced and the back does not sag. If it does, reduce the range.
